The Turks and Caicos Islands, located in the middle of the Caribbean, surrounded by the Atlantic and part of the British West Indies is your ideal vacation spot with crystal clear water, serene landscapes and diverse marine life. I spent 3.5 months in South Caicos, the smallest habitated island of TCI. South Caicos is a fishing town famous for its conch and lobsters and in the middle of the island of 4 sq miles is located the Center for Marine Resource Studies where I studied all about the Caribbean marine life, developed and learned underwater field exercises, explored the island life and did a directed research on the coral reef resilience against climate change.
This idea for this study abroad experience sprouted from a session with my honors advisor, Kayti Kennard who had known me for 3 years and knew what I really wanted even bore I knew it. And that was it, I was set to fulfill my childhood dream of SCUBA diving and exploring the field of Island Resource Management as a prospective field of career. Three and a half months down the line, I was able to fulfill my dream, overcame my fear of water and decided what I wanted to do for sure in my career. It sounds out of this world but those three months were really precious to my personal and professional growth.
Apart from all other take aways, a forth coming development out of this experience is a prospective publication from the research I did over there. You can read more about the research in the subsequent tabs and see some of the pictures and videos from my semester abroad.
